The Indian benchmarks continued to witness lackluster trade in late morning deal on Friday as lingering worries over the impact of demonetization of higher value currency notes by the government, on Asia’s third biggest economy continues to sour risk taking appetite. The market saw some buying as bearish trade in last few trading session paved way for a good bargain buying opportunity, at existing levels.

At 12:15 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 26255.52, up by 27.9 points or by 0.11 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 8092.75, up by 12.8 points or by 0.16 per cent.   Investors are worried that demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes to curb black money may severely hit small and medium sized businesses that mainly run on cash while also take a toll on short-term discretionary spending.

In the day’s trade so-far, Sensex touched an intraday high of 26283.36 and intraday low of 26117.82, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8104.65 and intraday low of 8048.3.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 157.80,+4.06%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 687.50,+2.50%), Cipla Ltd. (Rs. 554.90,+1.87%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 301.45,+1.72%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1239.30,+1.61%), among others.

On the flip side, Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 385.40,-1.92%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 427.80,-1.66%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 229.10,-1.40%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2123.00,-0.89%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 469.10,-0.74%), were among top losers on the BSE.

On the sectoral front, healthcare and power stocks emerged as top gainers, adding as much as 1.32 per cent and 1.24 per cent respectively.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was flat. On BSE out of total shares traded 2494, shares advanced were 1185 while 1180 shares declined and 129 were unchanged.
