The Indian benchmarks edged higher in late morning deal on Wednesday, led by gains in metal and realty stocks, tracking a positive trend across markets in Asia amid optimism that the US economy is strong enough to withstand a rise in interest rates by the Fed before the end of the year, bolstering risk taking appetite. The undertone remained cautious as traders roll over their positions ahead of Thursday’s November derivative contract expiry.

At 12:20 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 25978.77, up by 17.99 points or by 0.07 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 8008.6, up by 6.3 points or by 0.08 per cent.  

In the day’s trade so-far, Sensex touched an intraday high of 26130.49 and intraday low of 25877.16, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8055.2 and intraday low of 7973.1.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 935.70,+3.12%), Lupin Ltd. (Rs. 1455.50,+2.97%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1367.30,+2.87%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 385.50,+1.98%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 156.80,+1.69%), among others.

On the flip side, Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1224.00,-1.88%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 180.90,-1.74%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1198.00,-1.63%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 4871.00,-1.21%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 444.75,-1.14%), were among top losers on the BSE.

On the sectoral front, metal and realty stocks emerged as top gainers, adding as much as 1.81 per cent and 1.54 per cent respectively.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2503, shares advanced were 1566 while 785 shares declined and 152 were unchanged.
