Indian equities are poised to open lower on Thursday after Wall Street suffered a mild setback after weeks of gains, while the dollar stayed in demand as US government debt offered ever-fatter premiums over euro zone bonds. Bearish trend in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for December delivery, which were trading at 8009, down by 29 points or 0.36 per cent, at 10:32 AM Singapore time, also signalled a negative start for Sensex. On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly lower as investors took profit from recent gains in the holiday season.

On Wednesday, Indian equity benchmarks ended on a flat note with benchmark index Sensex ended nearly 3 points lower, while the NSE Nifty held its psychological level of 8,000-mark, as investors turned cautious ahead of the December futures & options contracts expiry, amidst mixed cues from fellow Asian peers.

The 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex closed trade at 26,210.68, down by 2.76 points or 0.01 per cent, while the NSE Nifty ended at 8,034.85, up by 2 points or 0.02 per cent. On NSE, total number of shares traded was 72.72 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 15703.92 Crore. On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 410011 with a total turnover of Rs. 26227.70 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 1188595 with a total turnover of Rs. 72441.60 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 8301475 with a total turnover of Rs. 529300.55 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 376833 with a total turnover of Rs. 25536.46 Crore. The FIIs on 28/12/2016 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 1645.31 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 697.73 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 2329.16 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 686.04 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -683.85 Crore and Rs. 11.69.
