Indian equities are likely to open on bearish note on Thursday after the US Federal Reserve raised key interest rates, in line of expectations, by 25 basis points to between 0.50 per cent and 0.75 per cent. The investors would react to the Federal Open Market Committee commentary that signaled of faster pace of tightening than was previously expected, a move which will curb appetite for riskier assets. Back home, India's wholesale price index (WPI) eased to five-month low of 3.15 per cent in November as compared to 3.39 per cent in the previous month, bolstering the case for interest rate cuts from the Reserve Bank of India. Bearish trend in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for December delivery, which were trading at 8,122.00, down by 62.50 points or 0.77 per cent, at 10:40 AM Singapore time, signaling a negative start for Sensex.

Overseas, Asian markets were bleeding in red, barring Japan’s Nikkei 225, after of the US Federal Reserve hiked interest rates for the first time in a year and also indicated of faster pace of tightening than was previously expected. In the overnight trade, Wall Street ended lower after the Federal Reserve raised key interest rates by 25 basis points to between 0.50 per cent and 0.75 per cent, the first time in a year.

On Wednesday, the key domestic benchmark indices ended tad lower as caution prevailed in the market ahead of the US Federal Reserve policy review outcome to be released later in the day. The 30-share benchmark index closed trade at 26602.84, down by 94.98 points or by 0.36 per cent and the NSE Nifty ended at 8182.45, down by 39.35 points or by 0.48 per cent.

Top traded Volumes on NSE Nifty were ICICI Bank Ltd. 13062743.00, Axis Bank Ltd. 12775149.00, Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. 9535686.00, Tata Power Company Ltd. 8826457.00, State Bank of India 8672531.00.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 75.99 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 16150.98 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 169112 with a total turnover of Rs. 11127.12 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 408543 with a total turnover of Rs. 26350.38 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 2613978 with a total turnover of Rs. 175995.46 Crore and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 251879 with a total turnover of Rs. 16509.73 Crore.

The FIIs on December 13, 2016 stood as net seller in both equity and debt segment. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 3992.73 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 4157.15 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 4724.59 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 4568.59 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -731.86 Crore and Rs. -411.44.
