Indian equities are poised to open lower on Thursday tracking weak cues from fellow Asian markets ahead of US GDP data due today and the European Central Bank's economic bulletin. The market is likely to see thin trading as traders begin to quiet down ahead of the upcoming holidays. Bearish trend in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for December delivery, which were trading at 8,059.00, down by 18 points or 0.22 per cent, at 10:58 AM Singapore time, also signaled a negative start for Sensex. On the economy front, the RBI on Wednesday withdrawn restrictions imposed on bank deposits exceeding Rs 5000 in old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000. In a fresh notification, the central bank has said that deposits more than Rs 5,000 in of old notes will be allowed until December 30, but only to KYC-compliant accounts.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly lower, barring China’s Shanghai Composite, following weak closing of Wall Street in the overnight trade as investors booked profit in lackluster trade ahead of the upcoming holidays. On Wednesday, US stocks ended lower as investors took some breathe after strong rally in the last few trading session in the lead-up to Christmas.

Top traded Volumes on NSE Nifty were ITC Ltd. 12883058.00, State Bank of India 8778450.00, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. 7404147.00, ICICI Bank Ltd. 6987022.00, Hindalco Industries Ltd. 6539566.00.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 71.27 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 14048.65 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 144354 with a total turnover of Rs. 9406.57 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 420246 with a total turnover of Rs. 26669.86 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 3317253 with a total turnover of Rs. 220949.99 Crore and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 269599 with a total turnover of Rs. 17661.23 Crore.

The FIIs on December 21, 2016 stood as net seller in both equity and debt segment. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 3288.88 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 144.26 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 3910.25 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 1090.13 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -621.37 Crore and Rs. -945.87.
