Indian equities are poised to open flat to higher on Tuesday tracking muted cues from fellow Asian markets as most major markets were closed on Monday for Christmas holidays. The traders would react to Finance Minister’s statement that India need a lower level of taxation which is globally compatible if it has to have a broader base of economy. The market may also see some volatility as trader will rollover their positions ahead of derivative expiry of December series scheduled on Thursday. Bullish trend in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for December delivery, which were trading at 7,923.00, up by 12 points or 0.15 per cent, at 10:40 AM Singapore time, also signaled a positive start for Sensex.

On Monday, Indian equity benchmarks ended in the negative territory, with benchmark index Sensex ended below its psychological level of 26,000-mark, while NSE Nifty settled at its lowest level since May, on fears of hike in long term capital gains tax after PM Modi’s comments on weekend favouring increasing tax contribution from various market participants. The 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex closed trade at 25,807.1, down by 233.6 points or 0.9 per cent, while the NSE Nifty ended at 7,908.25, down by 77.5 points or 0.97 per cent.

Top traded Volumes on NSE Nifty were Hindalco Industries Ltd. 10229442.00, ITC Ltd. 8735299.00, State Bank of India 8592983.00, ICICI Bank Ltd. 6151958.00, Bank of Baroda 6151900.00.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 66.25 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 13142.71 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 261287 with a total turnover of Rs. 16377.68 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 852802 with a total turnover of Rs. 50624.55 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 4889883 with a total turnover of Rs. 307591.80 Crore and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 369861 with a total turnover of Rs. 24554.64 Crore.

The FIIs on December 26, 2016 stood as net seller in both equity and debt segment. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 2089.30 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 422.79 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 3549.95 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 917.02 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -1460.65 Crore and Rs. -494.23.
