Indian equities are poised to open on a cautious note on Wednesday, tracking mixed cues from fellow Asian peers after Wall Street ended mixed in overnight trade, ahead of the release of Union budget 2017-18 later today, which will give an indication about FY18 fiscal deficit target, divestment plans and announcement on the taxation front among others.

Trend in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for February delivery, which were trading at 8,599.50, up by 23.50 points or 0.27 per cent, at 11:00 AM Singapore time, signaled a flat to higher opening for Sensex. The market will closely monitor any tinkering to capital gains tax or an incremental increase in securities transaction tax.

On Tuesday, the key domestic benchmark ended bleeding in red as investors reacted to the Economic Survey report tabled by the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the Parliament, while caution prevailed ahead of Union Budget. The 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex closed at 27655.96, down by 193.6 points or by 0.7 per cent, and the NSE Nifty ended at 8561.3, down by 71.45 points or by 0.83 per cent.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 193.17 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 27936.57 Crore. On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 233383 with a total turnover of Rs. 16038.64 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 701594 with a total turnover of Rs. 47702.03 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 2881132 with a total turnover of Rs. 202034.71 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 383807 with a total turnover of Rs. 26805.42 Crore.

The FIIs on 31/01/2017 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 3336.30 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 540.83 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 2600.98 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 260.14 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. 735.32 Crore and Rs. 280.69.
