Indian equities are set to open lower on Monday, tracking mixed cues from fellow Asian peers, as investors remained wary over Donald Trump’s protectionist policies which would hurt Indian exports industry, especially IT and Pharma, which have a significant contribution to Indian economy. Muted trend in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for January delivery, which were trading at 8,358.00, down by 14.00 points or 0.17 per cent, at 10:50 AM Singapore time, also signaled a negative start for Sensex. The volatility will remain high in the holiday shortened week with the January expiry happening a day ahead of Republic Day holiday. Investors would also react to earnings reports of index heavyweights such as, Hindustan Unilever, Idea Cellular and Bharti Infratel, which will test the nerves of the traders with their financial results for the quarter ended December 31, 2016.

On Friday, the Indian equities ended lower, weighed down by losses in index heavyweights such as Axis Bank, Adani Ports, Tata Steel, ICICI Bank, SBI, L&T and Infosys, as investors remained wary ahead of the US President-elect Donald Trump taking charges later today. On the sectoral front, metal, realty, PSU, power, capital goods, banks and auto stocks witnessed hefty selling. The 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex closed trade at 27034.5, down by 274.1 points or by 1.00 per cent, and the NSE Nifty ended at 8349.35, down by 85.75 points or by 1.02 per cent.

Top traded Volumes on NSE Nifty were Axis Bank Ltd. 30189779.00, Idea Cellular Ltd. 27427310.00, State Bank of India 15341756.00, Hindalco Industries Ltd. 12034397.00, ICICI Bank Ltd. 11097327.00.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 114.99 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 19974.83 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 282009 with a total turnover of Rs. 19142.32 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 842039 with a total turnover of Rs. 55990.49 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 4494209 with a total turnover of Rs. 303923.95 Crore and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 508967 with a total turnover of Rs. 35551.39 Crore.

The FIIs on January 20, 2017 stood as net buyer in equity, but net seller in debt segment. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 4326.37 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 614.16 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 3852.75 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 844.23 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. 473.62 Crore and Rs. -230.07.
