Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty slip in red on profit booking; IT, Teck stocks weigh : 21/02/2017 12:34

Amidst choppy trade, the key domestic benchmark were trading in negative terrain in late morning deal on Tuesday, undermining firm cues from fellow Asian peers, weighed down by losses in IT and Teck stocks. However, strong buying across broader markets with MidCap and SmallCap gaining between 0.4-0.45 per cent capped the day’s losses. The market also saw some volatility as investors will rollover their position ahead of February F&O expiry on Thursday.

At 12:30 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was at 28621.26, down by 40.32 points or by 0.14 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 8866.75, down by 12.45 points or by 0.14 per cent.

In the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 28726.1 and intraday low of 28597.33, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8897.15 and intraday low of 8863.75.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 368.10,-2.01%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2473.45,-1.32%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 262.50,-1.26%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 1002.40,-0.92%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 674.00,-0.82%), among others.

On the flip side, Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 489.60,+1.87%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 985.40,+1.03%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 860.55,+0.91%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 459.20,+0.81%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 490.35,+0.75%), were among top gainers on BSE.

On the sectoral front, Teck and IT stocks were leading the decline, falling as much as 0.58 per cent and 0.38 per cent respectively.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2810, shares advanced were 1483 while 1155 shares declined and 172 were unchanged.
