Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty extend gain amid bargain hunting; Axis bank up 2%

The Indian equities continued to trade higher in late morning deal on Tuesday, helped by gains across financial and pharma stocks, tracking firm global cues. The market witnessed some bargain hunting which pushed stocks higher, following bearish trade in last few sessions. Axis Bank soared over 2 per cent after the private sector lender said that it has raised senior notes aggregating to USD 10 million under the medium term note (MTN) programme through its Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) branch.

At 12:25 hour, the Bombay Stock Exchange bellwether Sensex was trading at 29416.21, up by 179.06 points or by 0.61 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 9101.85, up by 56.65 points or by 0.63 per cent.

During the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched an intraday high of 29442.18 and intraday low of 29301.22, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 9109.75 and intraday low of 9080.8.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 498.20,+2.26%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1499.00,+1.64%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 701.30,+1.50%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 471.20,+1.22%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 1055.95,+1.15%), among others.

On the flip side, Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 187.05,-1.14%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 373.50,-0.47%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 280.90,-0.35%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 2634.00,-0.18%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3335.00,-0.16%), were among the top losers on BSE.

On the sectoral front, bank and healthcare stocks were leading the gain, adding as much as 0.79 per cent and 0.76 per cent respectively.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2831, shares advanced were 1608 while 1034 shares declined and 189 were unchanged.
