The Indian equities continued to trade lower in late morning deal on Tuesday, weighed down by sharp losses across healthcare and realty stocks, as investors rolled over their position ahead of expiry of May futures and options contracts due tomorrow. Reports of a suspected terrorist attack at Manchester that took 19 lives during a pop concert by US star Ariana Grande also kept investors jittery in markets. GAIL (India) tumbled over 6 per cent after the State-owned natural gas supplier reported a sharp fall of 68.7 per cent in its standalone net profit after taxes (PAT) at Rs 260.16 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2017, on the back of Rs 783 crore impairment charge on an investment in Ratnagiri Gas and Power Pvt Ltd (RGPPL).

At 12:25 hour, the 30-share barometer Sensex was at 30411.57, down by 159.4 points or by 0.52 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 9390.4, down by 47.85 points or by 0.51 per cent. In the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched intra-day high of 30610.64 and intraday low of 30377.77, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 9448.05 and intraday low of 9374.2. Meanwhile, the Indian Rupee fell sharply by 23 paise against the greenback amid fresh fund outflows by foreign funds and importers due to strong demand for the American currency. Among others, Videocon Industries continued losing streak for the second day, falling 20 per cent and locked in lower circuit amid surge in the volume trade. The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 606.00,-5.35%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 374.85,-4.17%), Cipla Ltd. (Rs. 539.00,-3.84%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 345.70,-2.33%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2849.40,-2.17%), among others.

On the flip side, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 6845.05,+2.17%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1328.00,+1.60%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 492.50,+1.21%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 029.20,+1.07%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 452.50,+0.91%), were among the top gainers on BSE. On the sectoral front, healthcare and realty stocks emerged as top losers, rising as much as 2.98 per cent and 1.93 per cent, respectively. The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2744, shares advanced were 461 while 2158 shares declined and 125 were unchanged.
