Sensex, Nifty stay on firm footing; metal, bank stocks shine 20/10/2016 13:26

The Indian equities continued to trade higher in afternoon session of day’s trade as investors and speculators indulged in broad-based buying activity, tracking a positive trend across markets in Asia as a rally in crude oil prices bolstered risk taking appetite. 

At 1:15 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was at 28118.4, up by 134.03 points or by 0.48 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 8693.3, up by 34.2 points or by 0.39 per cent. 

On the global front, Asian stocks were higher as traders eyed the outcome of the final presidential debate between Trump and Clinton. Hopes that the European Central Bank which meets today for an interest rate decision may offer some cues over a possible extension to its bond buying program also supported sentiment. 

In the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 28212.5 and intraday low of 28031.57, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8727 and intraday low of 8678.3. 

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 275.95,+4.13%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 280.20,+3.26%), State Bank of India (Rs. 259.45,+1.82%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1357.95,+1.18%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 430.40,+1.16%), among others. 

Meanwhile, ITC Ltd. (Rs. 238.55,-0.52%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1253.15,-0.43%), Lupin Ltd. (Rs. 1505.95,-0.40%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 747.55,-0.38%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 548.90,-0.25%), were among top losers on BSE. 

On the sectoral front, metal and bankex stocks were leading the gain, adding as much as 1.35 per cent and 1.32 per cent respectively. 

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2932, shares advanced were 1596 while 1113 shares declined and 223 were unchanged.
