Tracking positive cues from fellow Asian peers, Indian equity benchmarks were trading higher during the late morning deals on Monday. Also, investors indulged in buying activity mainly in the realty and auto sector stocks ahead of the RBI policy review on Tuesday.

At 11:07 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was at 28,207.86, up by 341.9 points or 1.23 per cent while the NSE Nifty was at 8,724.25, up by 113.1 points or 1.31 per cent.

Besides, easing worries over the health of German lender Deutsche Bank after reports emerged that it was set to be nearing a less-costly settlement than earlier feared, too had a positive impact.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading in the green after easing fears over European banks. Meanwhile, China’s Shanghai Composite was closed due to a holiday, Hang Seng climbed over 1 per cent and Nikkei 225 also rallied nearly 0.89 per cent.

Indian equity benchmarks are likely to witness a positive opening on Monday tracking a bullish trend across markets in Asia as worries over the health of German lender Deutsche Bank ebbed after reports emerged that it was set to be nearing a less-costly settlement than earlier feared, bolstering risk taking appetite. Gains in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for October delivery which were trading at 8,662.5, up by 0.13 per cent or 11.5 points at 10:38 AM Singapore time, signal that the Sensex may open higher today. At the same time, worries over Brexit and fears over escalation in tensions between India and Pakistan after last night’s terror attack at a BSF camp in Baramulla, which claimed the life of one soldier, may curb gains at Dalal Street. Caution ahead of Tuesday’s keenly awaited RBI monetary policy review which will be the first one for new governor Urjit Patel may also weigh on the Sensex. Traders are hoping that the newly constituted Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) headed by Patel may cut interest rates by 25 bps amid the recent dip in consumer inflation. Auto stocks will be in focus amid the September sales numbers. The focus will also be on September manufacturing PMI to be released today, and the services PMI later in the week, which will offer further cues over the health of Asia’s third biggest economy. Globally, the US jobs data for September will be eyed this week which may provide some insights over the next Fed rate hike. The 30-share Sensex last week tumbled 802.26 points or 2.80 per cent to end at 27,865.96 as Indo-Pak tension and worries over European banks weighed heavily.

On the Asia front, easing fears over European banks bolstered sentiment even as traders weighed UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s statement that she will start pulling out the country from the European Union in the first quarter of next year. Shanghai Composite was closed due to a holiday, Hang Seng jumped over 1 per cent and Nikkei 225 also rallied over 1 per cent as a weaker yen bolstered the lure for exporter stocks. Wall Street ended higher on Friday as financial shares jumped on reports that Germany’s Deutshe Bank is closing in on a USD 5.4 billion deal with the Justice Department, less than half an initial request, for settlement of a probe related to bad mortgages. Meanwhile, US consumer spending was little changed in August from July, while a gauge measuring consumer sentiment rose to 91.2 in September from 89.8 in August, marking the first gain in four months.

Asian shares began the new quarter cautiously firmer on Monday, while sterling took a spill as Britain set a March deadline to start divorce proceedings from the European Union. Risk sentiment had benefited on Friday from reports Deutsche Bank was negotiating a much smaller fine with the US Department of Justice, though the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that the talks were in flux. Just a hint of a deal was enough to nudge MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan up 0.2 percent. The index climbed 8.8 percent in the third quarter, its best performance since early 2012. The Australian market added 0.6 percent, while futures NKc1 pointed to a modest opening gain for Japan's Nikkei. The mood was supported by a survey showing activity in China's manufacturing sector expanded again in September, which may indicate that recent positive momentum can be sustained. The official Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) stood at 50.4 in September, identical with the previous month's level. A reading above 50.0 shows growth on a monthly basis. Chinese markets are on holiday for the entire week. Sterling shed half a US cent after British Prime Minister Theresa May said she would trigger the process for the UK to leave the European Union by the end of March. The pound was last quoted at USD 1.2929 having been down as far as USD 1.2902 at one point, its lowest since mid-August. May on Sunday told the ruling Conservative party's annual conference that she was determined to move on with the process and win the "right deal". Using Article 50 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty will give Britain a two-year period to clinch one of the most complex deals in Europe since World War Two. Things were quieter elsewhere in the currency market, with the dollar steady at 101.40 yen having wandered between 101.02 and 101.75 on Friday. The euro was flat at USD 1.1236, after rebounding from a nine-day low of USD 1.1153 on Friday, while the dollar index was up 0.07 percent at 95.529. A rally in financial stocks led Wall Street to a firmer close on Friday. The Dow rose 0.91 percent, while the S&P 500 added 0.8 percent and the Nasdaq 0.81 percent. A media report late on Friday claimed Deutsche and the US Department of Justice (DOJ) were close to agreeing a settlement of USD 5.4 billion, rather than the initially touted USD 14 billion. That report has still not been confirmed. Deutsche Bank AG's US-listed shares jumped 14 percent in reaction, but were still down 11.3 percent for the month. Its Frankfurt-listed shares rose 6 percent. Deutsche has significant trading relationships with all of the world's largest finance houses and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has identified it as a bigger potential risk to the wider financial system than any other global bank. Oil ran into profit-taking on Monday after enjoying its second straight monthly gain in September aided by OPEC's planned output cuts. Brent crude settled up 4 percent for September and U.S. West Texas Intermediate rose 8 percent. Early Monday, the December Brent contract LCOc1 was off 29 cents at USD 49.90 a barrel, while US crude CLc1 lost 36 cents to USD 48.88.

China's semi-official PMI hits 50.4 in September, as expected

The semi-official PMI from the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) came in at 50.4 in September, unchanged from last week and as expected. It follows the 50.1 reading on the Caixin PMI on Friday, with both surveys pointing to a mild recovery in the country's vast manufacturing sector and continued buoyancy in non-manufacturing and adding to expectations third-quarter economic growth will meet forecasts. "Overall, market demand was stable, market expectations were stable, and business activities were stable after August's recovery," Zhang Liqun, a government economist who advises the CFLP, said in a statement accompanying the release. "Conditions for stabilization of the economy are gradually accumulating."

Share prices are likely to rise next week, even as the market focuses on the Reserve Bank of India's
monetary policy, and automobile sales numbers for September. While concern over border tension
with Pakistan will likely persist, the fact that share prices yesterday saw a recovery, albeit a mild one,
indicates that the worries will not be in the limelight. Analyst recommends utilising the recent fall in
share prices as opportunity to buy shares of large-cap companies. They recommend staying away
from shares of mid-cap companies because these may succumb to profit booking if geopolitical
tensions flare up. Share indices ended lower for the first time in seven months yesterday on a monthon- month basis as flows from foreign institutional investors showed signs of slackening.

The fall in shares of telecom companies after the launch of Reliance Jio Infocomm services, concern
over Donald Trump being elected as the US President, and the possibility of a financial crisis due to
Deutsche Bank's inability to pay a $14-bln fine weighed on share prices. As a result, investors have
not aggressively rolled over long positions to the October futures and options series.

The RBI will detail its monetary policy on Tuesday at 1430 IST, with the central bank expected to
leave interest rates unchanged, and maintain a dovish stance. This will be Urjit Patel's policy debut.
The lower-than-expected inflation has opened up room for an interest rate cut, but the RBI may not
do so because of the upside risks to inflation, sticky core inflation, and foreign currency non-resident
(bank) redemptions. Stocks of automobile companies will be in focus next week, as they detail their
sales numbers for September. While the first half of September witnessed strong sales due to Ganesh
Chaturthi and Onam, the second half was muted because of the Shradh season, considered an
inauspicious period for purchase of new vehicles.

Stocks of fuel-related companies will also be in focus in the week ahead. The central government,
after market hours yesterday, cut the price of domestically produced natural gas on a gross-calorificvalue basis to $2.50 mBtu for Oct-Mar from $3.06 mBtu in Apr-Sep. The government is also
scheduled to revise prices of petrol and diesel, done every fortnight. Yesterday the 51-share index
ended at 8611.15, up 19.90 points or 0.2% from the previous close.
