The key domestic benchmarks continued to trade higher, holding early gains, in late morning deal on Wednesday, driven by rally in healthcare, power, IT and Teck stocks, undermining weak cues from fellow Asian peers. Following the Christmas and Boxing Day holidays, traders are back in groove to hunt for bargains as the market entered the last trading stretch of the year. The traders also rollover their positions ahead of derivative expiry of December series scheduled on Thursday.

At 12:25 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was at 26364.17, up by 150.73 points or by 0.58 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 8087, up by 54.15 points or by 0.67 per cent.

In the day’s trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 26377.46 and intraday low of 26216.54, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8087.15 and intraday low of 8033.25.

Outperforming the benchmark indices, the broader markets were trading on robust note, with the BSE MIDCAP was at 11851.76, up by 148.93 points or by 1.27 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 11887.68, up by 166.85 points or by 1.42 per cent.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 446.60,+2.09%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 473.00,+1.94%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 294.85,+1.90%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 3084.00,+1.59%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 886.80,+1.19%), among others.

On the flip side, Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 389.70,-0.78%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 464.75,-0.38%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1061.95,-0.23%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1354.00,-0.03%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 299.35,-0.02%), were among top losers on BSE.

On the sectoral front, healthcare and power stocks emerging as top gainers, adding as much as 1.39 per cent and 1.21 per cent respectively.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2530, shares advanced were 1756 while 638 shares declined and 136 were unchanged.
