Indian equities are poised to open lower on Friday tracking weak cues from fellow Asian markets. The market is likely to see thin trading as traders reluctant to buy risky assets ahead of the Christmas holiday. Bearish trend in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for December delivery, which were trading at 7,972.50, down by 18.50 points or 0.23 per cent, at 10:50 AM Singapore time, also signaled a negative start for Sensex. 

On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly lower after US stocks fall in the overnight trade as investors took profit from recent gains ahead of the upcoming holidays. Stock markets in Japan remained closed today on the eve of Emperor's Birthday. On Thursday, US stocks ended lower after reporting mixed bag of economic data with traders reluctant to buy risky assets ahead of the Christmas holiday as analyst opined that that a post-election rally meant that stocks were overvalued.

On Thursday, the Indian equities ended in a bearish territory for the seventh straight session, with benchmark indices Sensex slipped below psychological level of 26,000 and Nifty settled below its 8,000 mark, amid sustained selling by foreign portfolio investors and funds. The 30-share benchmark index closed trade at 25979.6, down by 262.78 points or by 1 per cent, and the NSE Nifty ended at 7979.1, down by 82.2 points or by 1.02 per cent.

Top traded Volumes on NSE Nifty were State Bank of India 12981595.00, Hindalco Industries Ltd. 9593033.00, ICICI Bank Ltd. 8137700.00, Reliance Industries Ltd. 6604416.00, Axis Bank Ltd. 6540181.00.

On NSE, total number of shares traded was 67.63 Crore and total turnover stood at Rs. 13533.63 Crore.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 275195 with a total turnover of Rs. 17558.80 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 543401 with a total turnover of Rs. 33905.09 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 6950193 with a total turnover of Rs. 464135.38 Crore and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 325774 with a total turnover of Rs. 21943.97 Crore.

The FIIs on December 22, 2016 stood as net seller in equity but turned net buyer in debt segment. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 3622.73 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 1222.13 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 4730.88 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 176.45 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -1108.15 Crore and Rs. 1045.68.
