Mirroring positive cues from the global peers, the key domestic benchmark indices extended gains during the noon trading session on account of buying in frontline blue chip counters.

At 12:20 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 26627.24 up by 261.09 points or by 0.99 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 8176.75 up by 73.15 points or by 0.9 per cent.

With the deadline for depositing old notes ending today, some analysts are hopeful that the government could announce measures to lift the economy.

In the bullish trade so-far, Sensex touched an intraday high of 26642.18 and an intraday low of 26406.53 The NSE Nifty touched an intraday high of 8182.05 and an intraday low of 8114.75.

Sentiments of investors got some boost after the report showed that Government's direct tax kitty has swelled to Rs 5.57 lakh crore between April 1 and December 19, thereby achieving 65 per cent of budget estimates. The mop up from indirect tax, which comprises customs, excise and service tax, in April-November period jumped 26.2 percent to Rs 7.53 lakh crore.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were ITC Ltd. (Rs. 241.60,+2.59%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 255.95,+1.91%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 269.65,+1.83%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 624.35,+1.71%), State Bank of India (Rs. 251.50,+1.60%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 301.30,-0.59%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 469.20,-0.33%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2652.00,-0.13%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 392.20,-0.06%), among others.

Among the sectors, FMCG index was at 8140.5 up by 142.94 points or by 1.79%. Dwarikesh Sugar Industries Ltd. (Rs. 323.50,+8.48%), Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar Ltd. (Rs. 14.34,+8.23%), Shree Renuka Sugars Ltd. (Rs. 13.89,+6.11%), Dalmia Bharat Sugar and Industries Ltd. (Rs. 136.70,+6.01%), Sakthi Sugars Ltd. (Rs. 35.05,+5.57%),.

In BSE, BSE_CGS index was at 13670.95 up by 146.38 points or by 1.08%. Havells India Ltd. (Rs. 338.40,+3.17%), Greaves Cotton Ltd. (Rs. 122.00,+2.69%), NBCC (India) Ltd. (Rs. 241.75,+2.48%), Carborundum Universal Ltd. (Rs. 248.50,+2.01%), V-Guard Industries Ltd. (Rs. 161.70,+1.95%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2546 , shares advanced were 1772 while 633 shares declined and 141 were unchanged.
