Mid-Session: Sensex zooms 380 pts ahead of ECB meet; Nifty reclaims 8,200 : 08/12/2016 12:37

The key domestic benchmark indices continued to trade higher amid broad-based buying by traders, tracking markets across the globe on hopes that the European Central Bank will extend its stimulus in its policy meet later today. Tata Steel rose over 4 per cent after the steel maker announced to invest one-billion-pound to save 8,000 jobs in the steel industry and the Port Talbot steelworks in south Wales.

At 12:30 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was at 26,619.37, up by 382.50 points or 1.46 per cent while the NSE Nifty was at 8,221.60, up by 119.55 points or 1.48 per cent.

Buying momentum was witnessed mainly in the metal and auto sector stocks.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 430.40,+4.34%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 459.85,+3.28%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 284.20,+2.56%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 5236.05,+2.30%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 312.65,+2.21%), among others.

Major show spoilers were NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 162.00,-0.67%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 3181.00,-0.14%), among others.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was positive. On BSE, out of the total 2390 shares traded, 1751 advanced while 516 shares declined and 123 remained unchanged.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading in the green followed by overnight gains at the Wall Street amid hopes that the European Central Bank would continue its asset buying campaign at a policy meeting later in the session.
