Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty gain strength ahead of F&O expiry

The key domestic benchmark continued to gain momentum with the Sensex rising above 31,000 level on positive global cues during the noon trading session ahead of the June F&O expiry.
At 12:25 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 31061.08 up by 226.76 points or by 0.74 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 9569.6 up by 78.35 points or by 0.83 per cent.
The sentiments were on upbeat mood after Japanese financial services major reported that India’s GDP growth witnessed a trough in January-March quarter, but going forward the economy is expected to see gradual improvement in growth numbers primarily driven by consumption.
In the bullish trade so-far, Sensex touched intraday high of 31097.92 and intraday low of 30905.86 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 9575.8 and intraday low of 9522.45.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 511.15,+3.37%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 531.60,+2.25%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 942.70,+1.98%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 383.95,+1.75%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1376.50,+1.56%), among others.
The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 958.00,-1.64%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 538.60,-1.21%), among others.
Among the sectors, Metal index was at 11342.95 up by 203.94 points or by 1.83%. JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 202.80,+2.66%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 247.90,+2.33%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 531.60,+2.25%), Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 121.85,+2.22%), NMDC Ltd. (Rs. 108.50,+1.93%),.
On the flip side, HCS index was at 14017.44 down by 19.62 points or by 0.14%. Lyka Labs Ltd. (Rs. 44.50,-3.26%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 538.60,-1.21%), Dr. Lal Pathlabs Ltd. (Rs. 793.00,-0.92%), Pfizer Ltd. (Rs. 1802.00,-0.49%), Abbott India Ltd. (Rs. 4200.10,-0.42%),.
The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2527 , shares advanced were 1764 while 638 shares declined and 125 were unchanged.
