The Indian equities extended rally for the fourth straight session on the first trading session of February series F&O contracts as banking stocks extended rally on strong quarterly results, tracking firm cues from Asian peers. Private sector lender ICICI Bank surged nearly 5 per cent ahead of its third quarter result. Besides, the investors also remained optimist over Union Budget 2017-18, hoping that it would sops for some sectors to help spur economic growth.

The 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex closed trade at 27882.46, up by 174.32 points or by 0.63 per cent, and the NSE Nifty ended at 8641.25, up by 38.5 points or by 0.45 per cent.

During the day’s trade, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 27980.39 and intraday low of 27759.48, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8672.7 and intraday low of 8606.9.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 272.05,+4.74%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 323.45,+3.82%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 176.85,+3.33%), State Bank of India (Rs. 266.50,+2.78%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1370.70,+2.60%), among others.

On the flip side, ITC Ltd. (Rs. 257.50,-2.78%), Lupin Ltd. (Rs. 1491.50,-1.77%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 466.10,-1.55%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 855.80,-1.53%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 969.00,-0.84%), were among top losers on BSE.

On the sectoral front, power and consumer durables indices emerging as top gainers, adding as much as 2.1 per cent and 1.52 per cent respectively.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 3159, shares advanced were 1487 while 1442 shares declined and 230 were unchanged.
