The Indian equities ended on positive note on Monday as investors shrugged off concerns over Donald Trump’s protectionist policies and shifted focus to Union Budget 2017-18 which will be presented on February 1. Today, the Supreme Court dismissed the plea which sought extension of the Budget presentation date to after the Assembly Elections in the five states. The market witnessed bargain hunting across metal and PSU stocks.

The 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex closed trade at 27117.34, up by 82.84 points or by 0.31 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 8391.5, up by 42.15 points or by 0.5 per cent.

During the day’s trade, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 27167.79 and intraday low of 26963.58, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 8404.15 and intraday low of 8327.2.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 470.95,+2.41%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1258.75,+1.77%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 532.15,+1.72%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 461.65,+1.55%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3104.00,+1.55%), among others.

On the flip side, ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 257.45,-2.26%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1393.50,-1.49%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 445.10,-1.20%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 634.50,-1.00%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1015.95,-0.95%), were among top losers on BSE.

On the sectoral front, metal and PSU indices emerging as top gainers, adding as much as 2.61 per cent and 1.26 per cent respectively.

The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 3100, shares advanced were 1698 while 1214 shares declined and 188 were unchanged.
